Both bandwidth providers had to cut off their stream relays yesterday. The stream is up on a temporary relay, which may go down anytime, so DIU urgently needs something stable. If you've got enough bandwidth for a 20+ relay, contact me.

The fun continues. The server was down part of the day on Sunday due to a dead power supply and for a while today due to a DSL router replacement and network reconfig.

Epsilon Minus made a great parody of the goth/industrial/LJ drama scene.

6.Jan.2004

2003 ended with a bang, and no, I'm not talking about New Year's "celebratory gunfire" in Detroit. The short version is that the server was down for a few days. The main stream is back online now and upgraded to 128k, and the modem stream is offline. For those of you interested in such things, the gory details are below:

The server's HD with all the industrial MP3s died, so I took the drive out and shared the backup copy from my main PC, a Windows 2000 box. The backup wasn't up to date, and the current playlist was lost, so I put an old playlist on. The stream died a few times during this period, because winamp on the server needed to be restarted every time the w2k box was booted, and I kept forgetting to do this.

Meanwhile I'd been working on building a new server (made from donated and recycled parts). It was originally set up with Windows 2000, but I'm trying to escape from MS, so I wiped the drive and with the help of Fati from Venereal Injection installed Slackware 9.1. The new server hardware is an Athlon 500 mhz, with 640 MB RAM and TNT 2 video card (all donated), boot HD is a 9.1 GB 10K RPM ultra SCSI, MP3 HD is a 40 GB IDE, with a SCSI DVD and CD-ROM burner, and two 100 MB NICs (spare parts that were lying around). The monitor is a 15", $5 Salvation Army special.

The old DIU server, which runs NT 4, had been getting more flaky. I suppose that happens when you run a K6-2 500 for three years at 90-100% CPU utilization 24/7. Besides the constant need for an large fan blowing on it to keep from rebooting, a NIC died on 12/31 and after a powerdown the server refused to boot. I finally got it back up, and it ran ok for a couple days, until...

My ISP started having connection problems. The Slackware box wasn't quite ready to go, but it seemed like a good time to swap it in. When the ISP came up, the new NIC attached to the internet grabbed a new DHCP address. So the test server was running, but I couldn't reach the relay provider to change the relay IP address, so the main stream was effectively down. (In case some of you are wondering why I didn't use the NIC from the NT server, it was an old ISA NIC, and I didn't want to put it in the new server.)

Today the relay got switched over, and the stream is up at 128K. The high end is a lot crisper at 128K. The modem stream is down for now. Shoutcast under Linux doesn't support multiple streams off a single source, and I haven't had time to work on it yet. I'm not sure it's worth the effort to set up, based on the number of listeners it was getting. If you want the modem stream back or have any comments on the quality of the stream (good or bad), let me know. Thanks.

So what's next? The worse is over, but the server still needs tweaking, so the stream may have some brief downtime. The What's Playing? page (status.htm) was generated by the obsolete Music Ticker plugin, and the links were added by a perl script I wrote, so that all needs to be redone. Right now, the status page points to the shoutcast server's 10 recent songs. I'll be working on a new playlist too.

As for 2004, I'm plannning a page redesign (suggestions and graphics are welcome), and live in-studio shows (finances to purchase gear permitting). The new server should be able to handle live show relaying, something that routinely crashed the old one, so there will be more of those. Musically, I'm working on bringing back some of the old favories plus the best unsigned and indie bands (both local and otherwise). DIU pretty much coasted through 2003, while I focused most of my efforts into the political/legal end of webcasting. I'll still be working with the Webcaster Alliance on that stuff, but I'll be spending a lot more time on the music played on DIU.

Sorry for the length, that was a lot longer than I expected.

As always, thanks for listening! Have a great 2004.

Brian

11.Jul.2003

The Washington post ran an article on Wednesday, Net Radio Group Threatens to Sue RIAA. I posted a slashdot article with some links here. The Register and CNET also covered the story.

For a much more up to date look at internet radio news, see the Webcaster Alliance site.

I added a couple hours of music to the current playlist. I'll be adding more over the weekend and taking off the oldest songs.

9.Jul.2003

Webcaster Alliance President Ann Gabriel and I will be speaking at Defcon on August 2, on internet radio politics. Details here.
